Do You Know an Up and Coming Scientist?

Salish Sea Expeditions is currently seeking middle and high school students to present original fieldwork at their 2nd annual Student Science Symposium to be held at Woodland Park Zoo on Friday, June 4th.

Salish Sea Expeditions is a champion of hands-on scientific inquiry. Our annual Science Symposium is an opportunity to showcase the region’s student field research efforts, while also providing attending teachers with professional development on best practices in implementing inquiry-based field science with students.

If you have a student or group of students who would benefit from the opportunity to present their scientific research, please encourage them to participate. We welcome original field-based research in all scientific disciplines for students in grades 5 through 12. Students may present individually or as part of a team using either a PowerPoint or poster.

What: Salish Sea Student Science Symposium
When: Friday, June 4, 2010
 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Where: Woodland Park Zoo, Seattle WA
Who: Students in grades 5 through 12 and their teachers

The Event: Presenting students and teachers will arrive before other guests to set up. Students’ presentations will follow throughout the day, with breaks for lunch, professional scientists’ presentations, and time to review the work of other students and local organizations in our exhibition hall. Additionally, several workshops for students will address a range of topics particular to the Puget Sound region and facilitated by regional scientists, resource managers and environmental stewards.  There will be a professional development breakout session (4.5 clock hours) for teachers regarding the implementation of inquiry-based field science in the classroom as well.

This event is hosted by Salish Sea Expeditions, a nonprofit organization established to provide an opportunity for students to design and conduct authentic scientific research from the decks of a 61′ sailing vessel on Puget Sound. NOAA, Puget Sound Partnership, the Woodland Park Zoo and the Washington State Academy of Science are proud sponsors of the Symposium.
